68. The Pen

 

29th initialed sura, 1st initialed revealed, 2nd revealed overall

 

In the name of God, the All Gracious, the All Merciful

 

 

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

                                نُونْ وَالْقَلَمِ وَمَايَسْطُرُونَ

Nun. By the pen and what they write.

 

5271 2693 21 2 1387 2

                            مَا أَنْتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍ

You are not crazy regarding your Lord’s blessings.

 

5272 2694 22 3 1388 3

                              وَإِنَّ لَكَ لأجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍ

And indeed there shall be a well deserved recompense for you.

 

5273 2695 23 4 4

                                  وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلى خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ

And you possess a great moral character.

 

5274 2696 24 5 1389 5

                                       فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَيُبْصِرُونَ

You will soon see and they will also see-

 

5275 2697 25 6 6

                                           بِأَيِّكُمُ الْمَفْتُونُ

-which one of you is being tested.

 

5276 2698 26 7 1390 7

       إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ ضَلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ

Indeed your Lord knows best who has strayed off His path, and He knows best the guided ones.

                                      فَلا تُطِعِ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ

Therefore, do not obey the rejecters.

 

5278 2700 28 9 9

                                  وَدُّوا لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ

They love to compromise so that you may compromise. 

 

5279 2701 29 10 10

                              وَلا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلافٍ مَهِينٍ

And do not obey every lowly, swearer,-

 

5280 2702 30 11 1391 11

                                       هَمَّازٍ مَشَّاءٍ بِنَمِيمٍ

-a slanderer, a backbiter,-

 

5281 2703 31 12 12

                                   مَنَّاعٍ لِلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ

-forbidder of righteousness, transgressor, sinful. 

 

5282 2704 32 13 1392 13

                                      عُتُلٍّ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ زَنِيمٍ

Finally he is unappreciative and full of greed.

 

5283 2705 33 14 14

                                   أَنْ كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ

Although he possesses money and sons.

 

5284 2706 34 15 15

                   إِذَا تُتْلَى عَلَيْهِ آيَتُنَا قَالَ أَسَطِيرُ الأوَّلِينَ

When Our signs are recited to him, he says; tales from the past.

                                  سَنَسِمُهُ عَلَى الْخُرْطُومِ

We will soon mark his nose.

 

5286 2708 36 17 1393 17

      إِنَّا بَلَوْنَاهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَا أَصْحَبَ الْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ

Indeed, We tested them just as We tested the proprietors of the garden, as they planned to pick the fruits in the morning.

                                             وَلا يَسْتَثْنُونَ

However, they had no clue. 

 

5288 2710 38 19 1394 19

              فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَائِفٌ مِنْ رَبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَائِمُونَ

Then arriving was a visitor from your Lord while they were asleep. 

 

5289 2711 39 20 20

                                     فَأَصْبَحَتْ كَالصَّرِيمِ

Consequently, by the morning, it became completely barren.

 

5290 2712 40 21 21

                                         فَتَنَادَوْا مُصْبِحِينَ

In the morning, they announced,-

 

5291 2713 41 22 22

                أَنِ اغْدُوا عَلَى حَرْثِكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَرِمِينَ

-it is morning, go to your harvest, if you want to pick the fruits.

 

5292 2714 42 23 1395 23

                                 فَانْطَلَقُوا وَهُمْ يَتَخَفَتُونَ

They therefore departed, whispering,-
